Update – Dead body (Whetstone Brook)

03/31/2017 – Investigation is still ongoing. Additional facts we have at this time include:

  • With the assistance of area criminal justice agencies we have identified the decedent.

  • His identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

  • All information we have received and uncovered during this investigation points to this death not being a homicide and there is no risk or danger for the area residents or the public in general.

03/30/2017 – Investigation is ongoing at this point. We have received information from multiple citizens. This information is currently being evaluated and investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division. 

Facts we have at this time:

- The decedent is an unidentified black male, 5'7", 222 lbs, age in the mid-40's

- He was found unclothed;

- Determination of the manner of death is pending;

- No information we have received/uncovered so far identifies any risk or danger for the area residents or the public in general;

- No images of the decedent will be released at this time.

03/28/2017 – On March 28, 2017 atapproximately 1:26pmthe Brattleboro Police Department responded to the Whetstone Brook behind 125 Canal St.  for apossible body in the water.  Brattleboro Police Department arrived on scene and found a male subject who was unconscious and not breathing in the water.  There is no danger to the public at this point. The investigation is still ongoing. If anyone has information please call Detective Washburn.

Pedestrian struck by a vehicle

On 04/05/2017 at approximately 1735 hours Brattleboro Police responded to the Price Chopper parking lot for a report of a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. The Brattleboro Fire Department and Rescue Inc. also responded. Christopher M. Honnold was operating a white 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and struck a male pedestrian at a low speed who was walking across the parking lot towards Price Chopper. Stearns was transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Justin Perdue, 26 Year Old Male from Brattleboro

On 4/4/17 Brattleboro Police were dispatched to a residence in the Mountain Home Trailer Park in Brattleboro for an open 911 line. Upon arrival, investigation lead to the arrest of Perdue for three counts of Domestic Assault, and Impeding access to Emergency Services. Perdue was transported to the Brattleboro Police Department where he was fingerprinted, photographed, and lodged. While lodged at the Brattleboro Police Department, Perdue violated his conditions of release by contacting an individual that he was ordered not to. Neither party required medical attention. Perdue will appear at Windham County Superior Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Domestic Assault

Robert Crochetiere, 61 of Brattleboro

On 4/4/2017 at approximately 6:07 AM officers of the Brattleboro Police Department responded to a report of a family dispute at a residence on Elliot Street. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Robert Crochetiere (61 of Brattleboro). Crochetiere was held until deemed sober, and later released on court ordered conditions. Crochetiere was issued a citation to appear at court at a later date and time to answer to the charge of Domestic Assault.

Jonathan K. Gray, age 45, residence homeless

On 04/04/17 at approximately 4:20 a.m., Brattleboro Police were on patrol of Putney road and witnessed a suspicious person at the front door of a local business. Upon investigation it was determined that the person was Jonathan Gray and he had Conditions of Release to reside in Dover. Gray was issued a Citation to appear in court at a later date.

Driving While Criminally Suspended

Gregory Moffit 28 of Brattleboro

On 4/03/17 Gregory Moffit, 28 year old male of Brattleboro, was seen operating a motor vehicle in the Canal Street area of Brattleboro. When an investigative motor vehicle stop was initiated. It was determined that Moffit was operating the motor vehicle while under criminal suspension. Moffit was held in lieu of bail and will appear in Windham County Superior Court at a later date.

Retail Theft

Christine Johnson, age 25, residence Brattleboro

On 04/04/17 at approximately 1030 a.m. Brattleboro Police responded to a local business for a report of retail theft. Upon investigation it was determined that Christine Johnson had committed the offense of retail theft. Johnson was issued a citation to appear in court at a later date.

Simple Assault, Disorderly Conduct

Ashley Hawthorne. 29 Year Old Female from Brattleboro

On 4/1/17 Brattleboro Police responded to the parking lot of a Hotel on Putney road in Brattleboro for a report of two females fighting. Investigation lead to the arrest of King for Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct, and the arrest of Hawthorne for Disorderly Conduct. King was transported to the Brattleboro Police Department where she was processed, and Hawthorne was cited on scene. Neither party required medical assistance. Both individuals will appear at Windham County Superior Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Retail Theft

Shane Smart, 24 Year Old Male from Brattleboro

On 4/1/17 Brattleboro Police responded to a business on Putney Road in Brattleboro for a complaint of retail theft. Investigation lead officers to cite Smart for retail theft. Smart will appear at the Windham County Superior Court at a later date to answer his charge

Unlawful Trespass

Brandon Porter 25 of Brattleboro

On 4-01-2017 the Brattleboro Police Department arrested Brandon Porter of Brattleboro, VT. Porter was charged with Unlawful Trespass for having entered upon property he was previously Trespassed from. Porter was cited to appear in the Windham County Superior Court, Criminal Division at a later date to answer to this charge.

Jonathon K. Gray, 45, Homeless

On 04/04/17 at approximately 4:20 a.m., Brattleboro Police were on patrol of Putney road and witnessed a suspicious person at the front door of a local business. Armed Suicidal Subject

On 4/3/17 at around 3:20pm Brattleboro police received a 911 call related to an armed subject who had locked himself in a residence at 152 Maple Street. The caller reported that during a conversation with her, the subject had retrieved a handgun from a vehicle, entered his residence, and locked himself inside. The caller reported that the subject made comments that indicated to her that he was going to commit suicide.

Brattleboro police responded. Initially they were unable to make contact and a perimeter was established. Additional officers arrived on scene and eventually 11 BPD officers were involved. The Brattleboro fire department and Rescue Inc. responded and assisted with traffic control and command post management.

Police established contact with the subject with the assistance of a family member. The subject eventually agreed to come out of the residence and was taken into protective custody by the police at around 4:40pm. He was transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital by ambulance for evaluation. BPD seized a semi-automatic handgun.

The subject is a 27 year old man. His identity is not being released by police. As of this release the subject was not arrested for committing any crimes. No charges are anticipated.

 

 

Driving with a Suspended License

On 04/02/17 at approximately 11:49pm, Officers stopped a vehicle on Canal Street after observing a traffic violation. Investigation revealed that the operator, identified as Todd Maskell was under criminal license suspension in the State of Vermont. Maskell was arrested, and issued a citation for the offense ordering him to appear in Windham County Superior Court at a later date.

Unlawful Mischief

Sarah L. Wright, 35, of Hinsdale, NH

On 04/01/17 at approximately 1024 p.m. Brattleboro Police responded to Elliot St. for a report of a intoxicated female in the road. Upon investigation it was determined that Sarah Wright had smashed a window on a local residence. Wright was arrested and issued a citation for Unlawful Mischief. Wright was ordered to appear at Windham County Court at a later date.

Domestic Assault

Mary Sobieski, 28, of Brattleboro, VT

On 4/1/17 Brattleboro Police cited Mary Sobieski for Domestic Assault. This was the result from an ongoing investigation that originated on 2/23/17, when an individual came to the Brattleboro Police Station to report the assault. Sobieski was cited and will appear in court at a later date to answer the charge.

Citizen Dispute

Jonathan Holway, 23, of Brattleboro, VT

On 03/31/17 at approximately 6:15pm, Officers were dispatched to a residence on South Main Street for a reported dispute. Officers were then informed that a male (later identified as Jonathan Holway) had left the residence and had broken a window with a cinder block. While responding, an Officer located Holway walking on South Main Street. Holway advanced towards the officer while brandishing a sword. Holway did not initially comply with commands to drop the sword, however did eventually relinquish the weapon. Holway then actively resisted efforts to take him into custody, and spit bodily fluids at officers. Once he was placed in custody, he kicked a window and door causing damage to a police vehicle.

As a result of the incident, Holway was charged with the following offenses:

Aggravated Assault on an Officer

Disorderly Conduct

Resisting Arrest

Unlawful Mischief

Interference With Access to Emergency Services

Assault on a Police Officer with Bodily Fluids

Holway was lodged at Southern State Correctional Facility in lieu of $2500.00 bail related to the above offenses. He was issued a citation, ordering him to appear in Windham County Superior Court at a later date.

SNOW REMOVAL

RE:          PARKING LOT SNOW REMOVAL

The Town of Brattleboro would like to remind everyone that the snow emergency ban is in effect. 

Snow and ice will be removed from the parking lots in the downtown area this evening.  

Parked vehicles in the downtown parking lots must be removed by 1:00am or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.

If vehicles are going to remain in Town overnight they should park in the Brattleboro Transportation Center. If you use the Transportation Center, do not park in a Reserved Permit space without a permit. Pay and Display is in effect after 9:00 a.m.

Warrant, possession of heroin and crack cocaine

Lisa Gendron - 23 - Brattleboro

On March 22, 2017 Brattleboro Police came into contact with Lisa Gendron on Brook Street. While dealing with Gendron it was found she had three active warrants in the State of Vermont. Gendron was arrested and transported to the Brattleboro Police Department. When Gendron was arrested she found to be in possession of heroin and crack cocaine. Gendron was held at the Brattleboro Police Department until she could be seen in court.

 

Unlawful Trespass

Richard Brown, 46

On 03-28-2017 the Brattleboro police arrested Richard Brown of Brattleboro, VT. Brown was charged with Unlawful Trespass for having entered upon property he was previously excluded from. Brown was cited to appear in the Windham County Superior Court, Criminal Division at a later date to answer to this charge.

Xavier Vargas - Brattleboro - 29

On March 30, 2017 Brattleboro Police responded to a residence on Landmark Hill for a male who had violated his court ordered conditions of release. When police arrived they were advised Xavier Vargas made contact with a female who he was not have a contact with per court orders. Later in the day Vargas turned himself into police were he was processed and released on a citation to appear in court on a later date.
