Negligent Operation of a Vehicle

Lucas Newell, 18, of Spofford, NH

Detective Eaton

On August 17, 2017 at approximately 0602 hours, Brattleboro Police responded to Marlboro Rd just before the Marlboro Town line for a report of a single vehicle rollover. On arrival, a pickup truck with heavy damage was located on all 4 tires in the westbound lane, facing eastbound.

Police learned that the operator, Lucas Newell, was in the same vehicle with the same occupants and had just rolled his truck over in Halifax within an hour and a half prior to this incident. Newell had fallen asleep at the wheel in Halifax prior to crashing. The truck was still in operable condition in Halifax, so Newell continued to drive.

Newell fell asleep again and crashed a second time in Brattleboro prompting our response. The two crash locations are approximately 10 miles apart.

All three occupants of the truck were transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Newell was issued a citation for negligent operation.

Brattleboro Fire, Rescue Inc. and Al's towing assisted with the scene.
