On May 14, 2016 at approximately 2308 hours, a detective from the Brattleboro Police Departments Criminal Investigation Division responded to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Emergency Department with an employee with the Department of Families and Children regarding suspected child abuse. Through investigation, it was learned that a 5 year old female had sustained significant injuries to her face and body.
As the investigation progressed, probable cause was developed that lead to the arrest of Nikolaus Trombley on on June 3, 2016. Trombley was remanded to the custody of probation. He is currently being held without bail at the Southern State Correctional Facility on a probation violation. He is scheduled to appear at the Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division on Monday June 6, 2016 where he is facing criminal charges of 2nd degree aggravated domestic assault and cruelty to a child.
July 5, 2016 update:
Detectives from the Brattleboro Police Departments Criminal Investigation Division continued the investigation into the allegations of abuse in this case. Probable cause was developed to arrest the child's mother, Samantha L. LaValley. She was arrested and is being charged with domestic assault and cruelty to a child. She was released on conditions and cited to appear in Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division on Tuesday July 12, 2016.
