Criminal Contempt

David R. Gates (51) of Brattleboro

Sgt. Carignan

On 7/17/14 the above subject reported to the Brattleboro Police station for a daily check in and alco-sensor test as required by criminal court conditions of release. The officer who met with Gates determined that he had consumed alcohol in violation of his conditions. Gates was arrested and issued a citation to appear in Windham Superior Court on 7/22/14.

Bad check

Kristian P. Branley (24) of Stratton, VT

The Brattleboro police received a complaint from Auto Mall that Kristian Branley had passed a bad check to them for $4855.86 to pay for a snow plow. Police investigated this incident and on 7/17/14 Branley was charged with the offense of passing a bad check. He was issued a citation and released.

Aggravated domestic assault, Unlawful restraint

On 7/2/14 Brattleboro Police responded to America's Best Inn at 959 Putney Road for a report of an assault. The suspect in this incident had left the scene prior to police arrival.

Following an investigation police located and arrested the subject named above. He was charged with aggravated domestic assault and unlawful restraint and was ordered held on $2500.00 bail. He was ordered to appear in court on 7/3/14.

Trespassing

James E. Cassidy, 68, of Brattleboro

On 7/1/14 Brattleboro police responded to Hannaford Grocery Store for a report of a man who was intoxicated and had been asked to leave the store. Following a brief investigation the above subject was removed by police and charged with trespassing. He was issued a criminal citation for 8/12/14.

Trespassing

Donald J. Reetz, 45, of Brattleboro

On 6/30/14 Brattleboro police responded to the Whetstone Walkway near 2 Main Street for a report of an intoxicated subject sleeping under a bench. Police located the above subject in the park. As a result of similar previous conduct, Reetz had been warned not to return to the park or he would face arrest. Reetz was issued a criminal citation for unlawful trespassing and ordered to appear in court on 8/5/14.

Vehicle break-ins and larcenies

Over the past week, the Brattleboro Police Department has taken many reports of thefts of property from vehicles. These thefts are occurring overnight in residential neighborhoods. As of this press release, no arrests have been made but the thefts are being investigated.

In the vast majority of cases, the victim vehicles were left unlocked by their owners in their driveways. The Brattleboro Police would like to remind citizens to lock their unoccupied vehicles at all times, including when parked in their driveways or at their residences. Homes should also be locked when left unoccupied.

Unlawful Trespass and Retail Theft

Robert J. Ford (48) of Brattleboro

On 3/20/14 Brattleboro police responded to a report that Robert Ford had trespassed at Hannaford Grocery Store on Putney Road, a business that he was banned from entering.  While police were attempting to locate Ford, they received a report of shoplifting that had just occurred at Radio Shack on Putney Road.  Headphones valued at $29.99 were reported stolen.
 
Following an investigation, Ford was located and arrested.  He was released with court ordered conditions not to return to either business and issued a citation to appear in court.

Domestic Assault

Ryan L. Chase (37) of Brattleboro

On 3/10/14 Brattleboro Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute.  Following an investigation, the above subject was arrested for the crimes listed below.
 
Kidnapping
1st Degree Aggravated Domestic Assault
Possession of Cocaine
Interference with Access to Emergency Services
 
Six officers were involved with this investigation, which lasted most of the day.  As part of the investigation a search warrant was executed at a Clark Street residence in Brattleboro.  
 
The investigation into the incidents that led to these charges is ongoing.  No additional arrests are anticipated at this time.

Domestic Assault and Stalking

Brattleboro Police have been investigating a report of stalking, where the suspect allegedly appeared at the complainant's home, place of work, and other locations.  On 3/9/14 Police arrested the above subject for domestic assault, stalking, and interference with access to emergency services.  He was released with conditions and ordered to appear in court on 3/10/14.

Unlawful Restraint at BUHS/BAMS

Date of Incident: 01/26/14

Juvenile

On 1/25/14 at around 9:30am Brattleboro Police officers responded to the Brattleboro Area Middle School for a report that a 12 year old girl had been grabbed by another student.
 
Police conducted an investigation and charged a 16 year old boy with the unlawful restraint of a 12 year old girl.  The suspect allegedly seized the girl, covered her mouth, and restrained her.  The girl was able to call for help and the boy fled on foot.  
 
Police located the boy and he was charged with this offense.   He was released from police custody under several court ordered conditions, including that he may not go onto BAMS/BUHS property.  The boy was released to the custody of a parent after being ordered to Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division.
 
The girl is a student at Brattleboro Area Middle School and the boy is enrolled as a student at Brattleboro Union High School.  Police notified the administration of both schools who have assisted and cooperated with the investigation.  At the time of this incident both students were attending an event sponsored by a community group that was taking place at BAMS/BUHS.  The activity was not a school sponsored event.
 
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Domestic Assault

On 1/22/14 at around 8:00am Brattleboro police responded to the Super 8 Motel for a domestic dispute.  Following an investigation, the above subject was arrested for 2nd degree aggravated domestic assault and interference with access to emergency services.  He was ordered held on $10,000.00 bail.

Shoplifting

On 1/11/14/ at around 10:00am Brattleboro Police responded to Hannaford Grocery Store for a report of shoplifting.  Following an investigation, the above subject was issued a citation for stealing an 18-pack of beer.

Vehicle - Pedestrian Collision

Date of Incident: 12/27/13

On 12/27/13 at around 7:10am Brattleboro police, fire, and rescue responded to the area of 133 Canal Street for a report of a vehicle collision.  Initial investigation revealed the following.
 
Ruth T. Fleming (59) of Newfane, Vermont was driving a 2013 Subaru Impreza south on Canal Street near #133.  The vehicle drove up onto the curb and struck Joseph H. Beebe (66) of Brattleboro, Vermont, who was walking on the sidewalk at the time.  Beebe was transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for treatment.  
 
The investigation into this collision is ongoing.  Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have information is asked to call Officer Ryan Washburn at 802-257-7950.

Welfare check

Date of Incident: 12/5/13

39 year old woman

On 12/5/13 at around 11:20am Brattleboro Police responded to 15 Valley Street to check the welfare of a subject.  Vermont Health Care and Rehabilitation Services (HCRS) had called the police and asked for assistance in checking on the subject.  Two police officers and the BPD social worker responded.
 
While on scene, the subject attempted to harm herself.  While struggling with officers she retrieved a large kitchen knife, about ten inches long, and threatened to kill herself.  Police used force, including physical blows and a baton strike, to gain control of the woman. 


Once the woman was controlled, she was taken to BMH for treatment.  The uniform jacket of one officer was cut during the struggle, but no officers were injured.
 
No criminal charges have been filed in this case.

Aggravated Domestic Assault

Nathan E. Hazlett (40) of Brattleboro, VT

On 11/22/13 Brattleboro Police Officers responded to an apartment at 125 Canal Street for a report of a dispute.  Following an investigation, Nathan Hazlett was arrested for several counts of aggravated domestic assault.
 
Hazlett was ordered held without bail until his arraignment on 11/25/13 at Vermont Superior Court - Windham.  He was lodged at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, VT.

Arrest for Violation of Conditions of Release

Date of Incident: 11/17/13

On 11/17/13 the above subject reported to the Brattleboro Police Department as required by his court ordered conditions.  An investigation revealed that he had consumed alcohol in violation of those conditions.  The subject was arrested, processed, and released with a citation to appear in court on 12/31/13.

Death Investigation

Date of Incident: 09/04/13

On 9/4/13 the Brattleboro Police Department began an investigation into the circumstances that caused the death of Samantha M. Siano-Joseph (36) of Exeter, NH.  Siano-Joseph had been found deceased at the Brattleboro Retreat in Brattleboro, VT.  A press release was given at that time with more information.

On 10/24/13 Brattleboro Police completed their investigation, including a determination of the cause and manner of death made by the VT Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.  

The cause of Siano-Joseph's death was an overdose of prescription drugs.  The manner of her death was suicide.
