Welfare check

Date of Incident: 12/5/13

Officer Sgt. Carignan

39 year old woman

On 12/5/13 at around 11:20am Brattleboro Police responded to 15 Valley Street to check the welfare of a subject.  Vermont Health Care and Rehabilitation Services (HCRS) had called the police and asked for assistance in checking on the subject.  Two police officers and the BPD social worker responded.

While on scene, the subject attempted to harm herself.  While struggling with officers she retrieved a large kitchen knife, about ten inches long, and threatened to kill herself.  Police used force, including physical blows and a baton strike, to gain control of the woman.

Once the woman was controlled, she was taken to BMH for treatment.  The uniform jacket of one officer was cut during the struggle, but no officers were injured.

No criminal charges have been filed in this case.
